Players of Nigerian Professional Football League club FC Ifeanyi Ubah have threatened to go on strike if their salaries are not paid by the club. The domestic league has been on break since early July.
Our correspondent learnt that the players alleged that they have not been paid for seven months.
“The situation at the club is what we all know. The players are being owed seven months’ salaries each, and they have complained to the management, yet to no avail,” the source said.
In a letter to the club management, the players told the Nnewi side to pay them their salaries before Friday.
The letter signed by 25 players read, “We the players of Ifeanyi Ubah Football Club wish to notify the management of the club that starting from August 16 to August 24, 2018, if all our salaries or a minimum of four months are not paid, any action we take should not be seen as capable of bringing the game to a standstill.”
However, the spokesman for the club, Mr Iyke Nwokedi on Thursday, told our correspondent on phone that the management was not aware of the letter. “The management has not received any letter from the players yet,” Nwokedi said.
Meanwhile, the second round of matches in the Nigeria National League has been scheduled to resume on September 12.
In a letter to the clubs on Thursday, the Chief Operating Officer of the NNL Lawrence Katken said all outstanding matches from the first round would be played as the second round progresses.
The NNL is made up of 48 clubs in four groups and at the end of the season.
Top two teams in each group will qualify for the play offs in which four of them make it to the Nigeria topflight.
