The issue of poor waste management continues to be a thorn in the flesh of Nnewi as they continue to suffer and cry out to the government for succour in the aspect of waste management in the town.
Earlier on this week, we gave a report on how badly the poor or non-management of waste in the town is, yet since then up until today nothing has been done about it. It cannot be overemphasized, the health hazards that these wastes pose to the inhabitants of these areas where they are left and its damage to the aesthetic nature of the environment.
Later on today, our correspondents saw the Anambra State Waste Management Agency (ANSWAMA) in some of the sites packing the refuses but then who knows when next they might show up. This brings up the question on virtually everybody’s mind, “for how long will this go on?”
Mr Chidiebere Micheal a traffic warden on duty explained to us the problems they are facing due to the wastes dumped disorderly along the roads. He outlined these challenges, like the traffic jam caused as a result of half of the road being blocked, thereby making automobiles fight for the little spaces left, to the buses calling passengers headed towards Onitsha not helping matters by their continuous disobedience of traffic orders.
The recalcitrance of the commercial drivers and motorcyclists coupled with the half refuse-divided roads all team up making commuting and pedestrial movement almost hell.
