The Indefinite strike organised by the Nigerian Labour Congress – the Organised labour union, today rendered bureaucratic activities paralysed in Nnewi.

In a stop-and-survey mission by our correspondent who went around town observing the state of government establishments in several institutions were shut down in accordance with the directive issued by the labour union mandating all civil servants in government institutions to go on an indefinite strike.

Apart from the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) which was observed to be busy as usual, other government agencies such as the Nnewi North Local Government Secretariat, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) were observed to be locked-down.

Speaking to Anaedoonline.com, a staff of the NSITF who spoke under the condition of anonymity said that an official directive was given to members of the bureau to join other labour union members on the strike.

Also speaking, the spokesman of the Nnewi North Local Government Chairman, Hon. Kenechukwu Okafor told our correspondent on phone that the strike of the labour union goes beyond the powers of the council chair, as workers were acting in solidarity with the national body.
