Hon. Mrs Ndidi Mezue, Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, has rescued some children, who were being used by a number visually impaired persons in seeking alms within Anambra State, especially Awka, the state capital.

Four children of school-going ages were spotted at different locations in Awka, while assisting beggars to seek alms during school hours.

Mezue, who since her appointment as commissioner insisted that there would be zero tolerance to child labour in Anambra, swung into action on sighting the children begging at major junctions in Awka.

In her usual compassionate way, she approached the children and their accomplices, took time to educate them on dangers of having their kids out of school, and begging for alms during school hours.

After educating them, the commissioner provided on-the-spot assistance to them, and subsequently offered to support the children’s educational career.

Following the agreement reached by the Honorable Commissioner and the parents of the children, some of them were immediately repatriated to their home states, to continue their disrupted education.

Recall also that the Honorable Commissioner had few months ago, inaugurated an action committee on child labour. The inauguration was followed up with a road show to create awareness on dangers associated with child labour and the ministry’s readiness to tackle the menace head on; in line with the vision and mission of the Anambra State government under His Excellency, Chief Willie Obiano.
