REPS CONDEMN SEAL OF ANAMBRA ASSEMBLY BY POLICE

The House of Representatives on Tuesday called on Ibrahim Idris, Inspector General of Police, to immediately withdraw all the policemen deployed to Anambra State House of Assembly to enable members of the parliament to perform their legislative functions.

Recall that the Anambra State House of Assembly was besieged by a legion of armed policemen on the 15th November 2018, on the directive of the State Commissioner of Police, Haruna Mohammed.

The resolution was passed following the adoption of a motion titled: ‘Illegal and unconstitutional take over and seal off Anambra State House of Assembly complex by Commissioner of Police,’ sponsored by Tope Olaniyonu (PDP-Kwara), who expressed concern that the action was perpetuated to frustrate the icon of democracy which is the legislature from performing its constitutional functions.

Some of the lawmakers, who spoke in favour of the motion are: Lasun Yussuff, Deputy Speaker; Samuel Okon (PDP-Akwa-Ibom); Riwande Shawulu (PDP-Taraba) and Emmanuel Opion, among others.

In his lead debate, Olaniyonu observed that the staff of the State House of Assembly were ordered to report at the office of the Head of Service of the state without justifiable reason.

“The House is aware that there was no likelihood of possible breakdown of law and order in the Assembly to warrant the seal of the State Assembly.

“The House is concerned that the action was perpetuated to frustrate the icon of democracy which is the Legislature from performing its constitutional functions.

“The House is cognizant that the act of the Police Commissioner and the executive Governor of Anambra violates the spirit and principles of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Legislative Houses Powers and Privileges) Act, 2017.”

In consonance with the prayer of the sponsor of the motion, the House is to set up a delegation that will interface with Anambra State House Assembly members and Governor Willie Obiano on a quick and lasting solution to the crisis.

The delegation is expected to conclude its assignment and report back to the House within four weeks for further legislative action
