IPOB: 33 NNEWI TRADERS MAY REGAIN FREEDOM TOMORROW

Barring any last minute change of plans, the 33 traders arrested in various markets in Nnewi over the recent disturbances by members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, may be freed on Friday, November 30.

A police source informed Anaedooline that high powered security meeting convoked in respect of the arrest is ongoing today; adding that the meeting may arrive at a decision that will warrant their immediate release.

The source said police has no concrete evidence against the persons, which will lay credence to police claim that the persons arrested are IPOB members.

“Having released one of the suspects, Abubakar Mohammed, who was the 34th suspect, there is no reason why other suspects will not be released unconditionally since nothing was found in them to incriminate them as IPOB members”, the source said.

IPOB in a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, on Wednesday, had informed the police that none of its members was among the 33 persons held in connection with the Friday problem in Nnewi; and further urged the police to release innocent traders.

Pressures were also mounted on the police by different organizations, including Nnewi traders, who closed down the 8 markets in the town since Monday, and insisted that the markets will remain closed until their members held in police custody are released.

Different human right organizations, are also on the neck of the Nigerian police, insisting that the arrest of traders in lieu of IPOB members that caused havoc in Nnewi is illegal and unprofessional.
