Ageing Gracefully: WHY ONYEABO OBI’S STILL ACTIVE AT 80

At age 80, the Distinguished Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Onyeabo Obi (Ose Oji Nnewi) is still very strong; and can comfortably play football and do jugging exercises.

In Nigeria, growing old is always a nightmare for many aged Nigerians because of the absence of proper health care schemes targeted at age-related diseases.

According to the latest World Health Organization ((WHO) data published in 2018, average life expectancy in Nigeria is 55years. For the male folk, the study predicts 54.7; and 55.7 for womenfolk.

The data further shows that Nigeria has a world life expectancy ranking of 178 out of 192 countries listed for the study.

Despite the woeful prediction of the study on a Nigerian’s life expectancy, Senator Obi, who marked his 80th birthday on 20th November 2018, attributed his sound health at a very old age to a cautious and active lifestyle, as well as his eating habit.

The senator, who represented Anambra West/Onitsha Senatorial Zone between 1979 and 1983, said: “In addition to the grace of God, the more exposed you are to what makes an easier and healthier life, the more your chances of living long.”

Speaking about his eating habit, he said, “Every morning, I drink a glass of warm water with lemon. This helps clear my system. The lemon I take every day is in my garden.

“My wife drinks a glass of Moringa leaf every day. Moringa is also in my garden. These things do not cost much; they are affordable.

“Before I eat each morning, I will take some fruits. Fruits should go on an empty stomach. After 30 minutes of taking fruits, I take my breakfast; then, my morning bathe. It is not healthy to take breakfast before having a bath. Also, at my age, I eat two times a day.

“Our old people who were not educated lived longer than we do today. During their time, they would take roasted yam with palm oil. Whenever they fall sick, they would use local herbs.

“Most importantly, living by the truth, saying the truth at all times; no matter the circumstances, keeps me off from stress and anxiety,” he said.

He advised Nigerians to be careful of what they eat so that they can ensure healthier living.
