2019: ASATU ORGANIZES TOWN HALL MEETING FOR POLITICIANS

As the season of elections into various offices and positions in the country is around the corner, political parties have long completed their primaries and candidates have emerged. Electioneering campaign has begun; and in the next two months or so, elections into various political offices will take place.



To this end, the Aguata branch of the Anambra State Association of Town Unions, ASATU, have organized a town hall meeting for politicians seeking various political offices in the forthcoming polls.

The event, held at the premises of the Aguata Local Government Secretariat in Ekwulobia, on Sunday, December 8, drew candidates of various political parties seeking elective positions, from the Senate to the house of reps down to the state assembly seats.

In his address during the event, Dr. S.A Akaneme, chairman of ASATU in Aguata, said the meeting was fashioned to be an interactive forum for elected representatives and those aspiring for elective offices from the area as well as other stakeholders in Aguata to meet and review acquaintances, progress and challenges of the area, and lay a solid foundation for sustainable development.



According to him, the interface with elected representatives would create an opportunity for elected representatives to present their scorecards, and, as well, present challenges in their respective offices; while those seeking elective positions would also share their aspirations and plans to deliver the local government from its present state of doldrums if elected.

In a keynote address, Prof. Romanus Ezeokonkwo, the President General of Mkpologwu Town Union, said the meeting was timely because of the election season in the country.

He called on the electorate and people of Aguata to do the needful and ensure that only credible candidates, who can protect the interest of Aguata citizens are elected at all levels, irrespective of political affiliation.

He noted that those who will be representing Aguata at different levels of political offices will be expected to address different challenges confronting the people of the area, including problems of infrastructure, youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, security, and peacebuilding.

At the event, those seeking various political offices took turns to address the gathering on their plans for the people if elected.

Incumbent member of the House of Representatives for Aguata Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Eucharia Azodo (PDP), said she is going back to the National Assembly for the third time to consolidate on her achievements. She expressed hope that PDP will take over power at the center; and that when that is done, she will be in a position, as a ranking legislator, to tackle most challenges confronting her constituency and also attract dividends of democracy that would develop and transform Aguata Federal Constituency.



Another politician, Okeke Chika Jerry (ADC), who is aspiring to represent Aguata State Constituency II at the state assembly, said if elected, he would focus on revamping the education sector, providing potable water and also working towards improving power supply in his constituency.

Hon. Linus Izeudu (ADC), who is aspiring to represent Aguata Federal Constituency at the House of Reps, said Aguata needs a reliable politician like himself to take the federal constituency to the next level. He said if elected, his primary focus will be to attract federal presence to the constituency in the areas of health care, steady power supply, potable water supply, and economic prosperity.

Afamefuna Ezenwafor (APC), who also aspires to represent Aguata II State Constituency, said if elected, his focus as a legislator will be to attract e-library and School of Nursing to the constituency. He urged the people to vote him, promising not to disappoint.

Comrade Emma Ezeokafor (YPP), who also aspires to represent Aguata II State Constituency, said if elected as a state lawmaker, he would introduce representation by consultation, as well as representation by inclusion. In doing this, according to him, he will provide a platform where constituency members will gather quarterly to have his scorecard and proffer suggestions on how to get the best for the constituency.

Ezeokafor, who is a Laboratory Technologist with the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, also said he will sponsor bills that will help check ecological problems in his constituency.

On his part, Nze Chidi Duru (APC), a two time member of the House of Representatives, who also said he won Best Federal Legislator Award (1999-2003) and (2003-2007), said his focus if elected, would be to sponsor bills that will enhance ease of doing business in Nigeria, and for promotion of Private Sector led economy.

On his own, Hon. Barr. Chukwudi Echezona Ezeobika (United Patriot – UP), said his aspiration is to represent Anambra South at the Senate.



Ezeobika, a lawyer, said if elected into the red chambers, he would take advantage of his youthful age to fight for the development of Anambra South in the area of provision of motorable roads, empowerment of youths, provision of potable water, among other democracy dividends.

Barr Ezeokafor, who is also the Acting National Chairman of the United Patriot, urged the electorate to stop recycling corrupt, old and incompetent politicians.
