MOVIE REVIEW: LION-HEART THE MOVIE 2019

On the 4th day of January 2019 LION-HEART, THE MOVIE premiered on Netflix, I wasted no time seeing it. I was not disappointed in the least.
LION-HEART THE MOVIE showcased the rich Igbo ethnic group’s cultural values, their industrial and dogged spirit, their close-knit family values, spiritual awareness you will find in most Igbo homes and the need for Nigerian ethnic groups to be united in diversity.

1) Let’s talk about the ACTING, shall we?

At the beginning of the Movie, I was taken aback by the shabby acting exhibited by the actors and extras that acted as the Thugs, they didn’t do justice to the role, they weren’t as aggressive as they should be. Attacking a business interest of the OBIAGUs should take some guts and bruteness, the THUGS weren’t convincing.
Apart from the disappointing beginning, the acting in the rest of the movie was near perfect.
Not taking away anything from the performance of rest of the actors who were awesome, I must give props the person that acted as the personal assistant to Adaeze Obiagu, she was a head above the rest of the casts.
I will give 7/10 for the acting in LION-HEART THE MOVIE

2 ) LIGHTING
I am a sucker for good light design in movies, it tells the story in a very chilling way. In this movie, the Gaffa ( Lights guy) did a wonderful Job. The Obiagu transport company’s Conference room was perfectly lit, it interpreted the scene; intimidating.
Another scene that had me literally “capping” for the gaffa (lights guy) was the scene where Ukwa met two Igbo men trying to defraud a Hausa man.

Even before the dialogue, you will know the scene had some sort of villains, the atmosphere was sinister. The lighting design set the tone for the final expose.
I will say 6/10 for lighting

3) CAMERA ANGLES
Honestly, I wouldn’t fault the camera angles, there were no special scenes that demanded some special camera angle, apart from few of course.
The camera angles that introduced Ukwa and Chief Obiagu’s chief rival were perfect, they were suspense filled. Good guy vs the Bad guy, same camera angles.
The camera angle that introduced the two boys defrauding the Hausa man was also perfect for that scene, You could feel the tension I will say 7/10 for Camera.

4) SCENE BLOCKING
The blocking of the scenes was basic even though two scenes stood out for me, the scenes where Adaeze was complaining to her mum of her displeasure towards her dad’s decision to put Ukwa in charge of the company and Ukwa’s unannounced intrusion.

The Blocking of the trio was perfect, Ukwa and Adaeze’s mum on one side with Adaeze at the other side, it was two against one, the other scene that had a significant blocking was the scene where Earnest Obiagu ( Pete Edochie ) and the CEO from Northern part of Nigeria met for the first time, Their sitting position was that of two big men sizing themselves up, nobody was less than the other, two equals, one more suspicious of the other.

perfect! for the blocking, I will give 7/10

5) Costume and set design

The costumier didn’t have a tough job on his/her hands, the characters didn’t need any special costuming. I must also commend the costumier for making Adaeze come off as a top company executive who has a sex appeal.

That was tricky but the Costumier was spot on with Adaeze’s costume, 7/10

6) Storyline

I was smiling throughout this movie, the use of what I refer to as story hooks didn’t escape my notice, Some critics have been asking what was Ukwa’s (Nkem Owoh ) role in the movie, I say UKWA was one of the hooks that connected the missing dots in the plot.
Ukwa did his job of connecting the dots that would have made the story shallow if they were not connected, the Icing on the cake was that he connected those dots with a touch of humor.
Another “Hook” was the early morning runs by Adaeze, when Adaeze kept on going for morning runs, I was wondering where the scriptwriter was going with it, I knew it was bound to be a hook so I was curious. The morning runs were a routine, the moment the company was about to be hijacked because of debts, Adaeze stopped her early morning runs. That showed her “down” moment. something unusual in her life.

Adaeze resumed her morning runs after having a heart to heart with her mum.
I had one minor issue with the storyline.
