Today in history, January 15, precisely 53 years ago, the Nigerian Army launched a military coup that has changed the course of Nigeria Politics.

The coup was led by Major Kaduna Nzeogwu and other Army Majors including Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna, Timothy Onwuategwu, Major Chris Anuforo, Major Don Okafor, Major Adewale Ademoyega, Major Humphrey Chukwuma.

The coup was successful in Kaduna, Lagos, and Ibadan but failed in Enugu. The events of this day led to the death of Brigadier Ademulegun, Colonel Raph Shodeinde, Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa, Colonel Lagerma, Lt. Col Pam, Col, Unegbe, Finance Minister Festus Okotie Eboh, Chief Akintola, Premiere of the Western Region and host of others.

This coup also led to a counter-coup where about 200 soldiers of Igbo origin were killed, which degenerated to the first Nigeria Civil war in 1967.

Also, today in history marked the end of the Nigeria civil war which lasted for three and half years.
