DAVID DE GEA GIVES MAN UTD HUGE CONTRACT BOOST BUT WANTS ONE THING TO SEAL DEAL

MANCHESTER UNITED goalkeeper David de Gea is willing to sign a new contract, but the club must offer a substantial pay rise to acquire his signature.

That is according to reports that the Spaniard’s outlook on his future has changed since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s arrival.

The Norwegian succeeded the sacked Jose Mourinho one month ago, and has won his first six games in charge.

The most recent scalp came in a thrilling 1-0 away win at Tottenham, in which De Gea made 11 saves – the most by any Premier League keeper in one game this season.

Speaking of the caretaker coach, who has refreshed the atmosphere at Carrington and Old Trafford, De Gea told Sky Sports after Sunday’s game: “He brings some happiness.

“The team is playing very well now and is strong. We know how to control the games, how to create chances, and this is the real Manchester United.”

The shot-stopper’s revitalised mood is good news for Old Trafford executives, who were struggling to convince the 28-year-old to shake hands on a long-term deal.

The club triggered a one-year extension in De Gea’s contract in November, which will keep him in Manchester until June 2020 at least.

But reports now suggest that he is making it clear to United chiefs that he wants to stay.

The keeper has won one Premier League title, FA Cup, Europa League and League Cup since being signed by Sir Alex Ferguson for £18.9million in June 2011.

His main aim is still to win trophies, which looked ever more unlikely under Mourinho, but De Gea, and his well-known agent Jorge Mendes, would expect a vast wage increase to reflect his importance to the team.

The four-time fans’ player of the season currently earns a reported £200,000-a-week – the same as Romelu Lukaku – while Paul Pogba (£290k) and Alexis Sanchez (£350k) earn a great deal more.

If terms cannot be agreed, United would be best placed selling their prized asset, for whom there would not be a shortage of suitors, in the summer while there is still time on his contract.
