FEB. 16: BISHOP EZEOKAFOR SAYS MASSIVE TURNOUT WILL CHECK ELECTION RIGGING

By Abuchi Onwumelu

The Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, His Lordship, Most Rev. Dr. Paulinus Ezeokafor, has said that turning out in great numbers to vote during the February 16 Presidential election in Nigeria will help check election rigging and manipulation of results.

The prelate, therefore, urged Nigerians to turn out en masse to cast their votes, and equally ensure that their votes count.

Ezeokafor advised Nigerians to vote wisely to ensure that the best crop of leaders emerge in Nigeria after 2019 polls.

The Catholic bishop, who spoke at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Awka, Tuesday, while speaking on the forthcoming general elections, cautioned against vote selling and vote buying, saying that such would be inimical to the process.

He said that vote buying and selling will only produce leaders who will not have collective mandate of the people; advising that politicians and their supporters should respect the constitution and play by the rules as, according to him, desperation and quest for political power should not be the primary reason for participating in an election; but a desire to improve on the society.

He also noted that the forthcoming general elections will be a defining era on how Nigeria and it people will fare in the next four years and, as such, the electorate should not compromise their voting rights.
