TWO PARTY SYSTEM BEST FOR NIGERIA, SAYS IGBO SPIRITUAL LEADER

Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka, aka Ogilisi Igbo, who is regarded as the spiritual leader of the Igbo nation, has made a strong case for Nigeria to return to two party system instead of multiple parties, stressing with dismay that the multiple party system as practised in the country presently wastes resources and logistics unnecessarily.

Giving his assessment of the election held on Saturday, February 23, Chief Ezeonwuka said that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should, as a matter of urgency, scrap all the “mushroom” political parties in the country because, according to him, such parties are existing without any impact on the democratic process; adding that a political party that cannot win election in one polling unit in the country is useless and should not exist.

“Looking at the results of the Presidential and National Assembly elections across the country, it is clear that the minor political parties, which I call mushroom parties, couldn’t win a single polling unit anywhere in the country; yet, they were registered as national parties. Some of such parties fielded candidates, who also couldn’t win their polling units not to talk of their wards; so, they have to be taken away from the system.
The money used to provide logistics for their involvement in the process could have been used on more profitable things”, he said.

Ezeonwuka, who is a member of the Board of Trustees, BoT, of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) added, “what is the essence of spending money on ballot papers for a political party that cannot win a single polling unit anywhere in the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)?

“These mushroom parties cause waste of money, and INEC just has to abolish and scrap them”.

He also made a suggestion for INEC to adopt the system that allows for independent candidates to participate in elections as it is done in the United States of America and other more civilized countries that practice democracy.

He opined that Nigerians would accept the idea of Independent candidates to save cost of logistics during elections, noting that it is easier and cheaper for people to contest elections as independent candidates than spend money on political parties that lack the resources in terms of finance, spread, acceptability and capacity to win elections.

Buttressing his points, he said: “I’m here at Oba in Idemili South. If I wish to contest as ward councilor or member of the state assembly, it will be easier and cheaper for me as an independent candidate than going through a political party. It will also be easier and cheaper for the electoral umpire because they will have to limit the number of ballot papers and save the cost of logistics”.
