PLANS TO BAN COMMERCIAL MOTORCYCLES: OBIANO WRITES OKADA ASSOCIATIONS IN NNEWI

There have been rumours making the rounds that Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State is planning to ban the operation of commercial motorcyclists in the industrial city of Nnewi, Anambra State, after the 2019 general elections.

To dispel this rumour, the governor has written the Okada association in Nnewi North Local Government to assure the union that his government has no such plans presently.
In a meeting with leaders of the Okada Union and its members in Nnewi, on Tuesday, 5th March, 2019, APGA stakeholders said the information is not true. Comrade Jude Udegbu, the state chairman of Okada riders, said they held a meeting with the governor where he assured that Okada business will not be stopped. He also revealed that the governor is presently considering lifting the ban on Okada operation in Onitsha and Awka.

Igweamaka Orajiuba (Obejirinasa), Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, also reiterated the stand of the governor on okada ban. “The rumour of Okada ban has been a constantly pestering issue in Nnewi. Stakeholders in Nnewi, especially Okada riders and businessmen in the motorcycle business in Nkwo Nnewi, have continued to lament the negative effect of such ban on the Nnewi businesses.”
Speaking at the forum, Nonso Smart Okafor, APGA candidate for Nnewi North House of Assembly, said he had a meeting with the governor earlier in the week where he raised the issue of Okada ban with him but the governor reiterated that he has no plan to ban okada.
The House of Assembly faithful quoted the governor as saying that banning Okada will mean crippling the economy of Nnewi and strangulating revenue of Anambra state.
