The True Story Behind Austica Memorial Secondary School Nanka

Prior to 1993, Nanka had a culture that discriminates against the widows; Widows were prohibited from seeing their husband’s dead body during the funeral.

A custom which came to an abrupt end in 1993 because of the action of one man and one woman, Scholastica Nnodim and Augustine Eze. Both members of a charismatic group, Mr. Augustina Eze was from Nsukka while Ms. Scholastica Nnodim was from neighboring Oko town.

It happened that these two individuals were invited to preach at a funeral while preaching, they spoke in favor of the widow while condemning the culture of a widow not see her husband’s dead body during the funeral.

At that instance, there was pandemonium at the funeral and in the process, both preachers were shot dead.

Both of them were buried in the church premises after which the elders of Nanka came together and agreed that the law that prohibits widows from seeing their husband’s dead body during the funeral should be abolished.
And it was so.

In their Honour and memory, a secondary school was built in Nanka which was named after them, Austica Memorial Secondary School Nanka, a name coined from Augustine and Scholastica.
