Madonna University: Vc Accuses Reps Committee Of Moral Compromise

The Vice-chancellor of Madonna University, Nigeria, Prof. Emmanuel Ezedum, Wednesday accused the House of Representatives committee on public petition of moral compromise.

Ezedum also alleged that it only takes a compromised public officer to talk the way the committee chairman did.

These allegations were made by the University Vice-Chancellor while briefing newsmen in Abuja.

But this development followed the petition written by two former students of the institution, Messrs Stanley Okoye and Ga-Lim Aondofa Lord against the University and the alleged manner and way it was being handled by the House committee.

The duo, it was learnt, was found culpable of vices such as examination malpractices, drug abuse and distribution and academic failure which led to their suspension, rustication and loss of an academic year.

Apparently dissatisfied, the affected students in 2015 instituted a legal action against the University at a Federal High court, sitting in Enugu. But the students lost the court verdict to the University.

It was on this basis, the students further wrote petitions against the University to the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, and House of Representatives seeking enforcement of their fundamental rights.

Against this backdrop, the University, according to the vice Chancellor dismissed the petitions as misleading, saying the students did not see any ground for appeal over the case they lost while having a court case pending in Enugu.

It, therefore, wrote to the Chairman, House Committee on Public Petition, Hon. Uzoma-Nkem Abonta representing Ukwa East, Ukwa West Abia state-federal constituency to be properly guided.

Besides, the University insisted that it has a clear-cut dispute-resolution mechanism through which it resolves internal issues that need to be explored in this circumstance.

Yet, the committee was reportedly unyielding and the University took exemptions to the way and manner it handles the controversial petition.

Ezedum said, “The former students lost the court case after examining their records that they were not good students.

“They have not appealed the judgment but resorted to guerrilla warfare.

“Also, the students did not tell the House committee that another matter is still pending in a court in Enugu but alleging ritual and extra-judicial killings.

“We, therefore, went to court to challenge the committee on its decision to handle the matter.

“The committee said even if we go to the whole court, it will still continue with the matter.

“The committee has demonstrated a show of compromise.

“Also, the committee sent invitations to the University two weeks after each sitting.

“It takes only a compromised public officer to talk the way the committee chairman did”.

When contacted for his reaction, Abonta said, “The University Vice-Chancellor can say what he likes. He can say anything. But the committee must do its work”.
