Raise Your Hands To Put An End To Malaria

25th April is set aside annually by the communities of the World Health Organization (WHO) to bring to closer light the need for commitment and investment for malaria awareness, prevention, and control around the world.

Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by species of Plasmodium parasites transmitted through the bite of female mosquitoes. Five species of Plasmodium parasite infect humans in different parts of the world and some of these species cause severe malaria than the other.

Good healthcare is vital to prevent and treat malaria. WHO latest world malaria report reveals that between 2015 and 2017 there was no significant gain made in the fight for malaria. The toll of malaria remains elevated. Each year, over 200 million new cases of malaria are reported. Every two minutes, a child dies of malaria disease.

Malaria death in 2017 remains unchanged compared to the previous year at 435,000 deaths.

In 2017, there were an estimate of 219 million cases of malaria disease in 87 countries and the highest prevalence in African countries. Nigeria is, however, one of the eleven (11) countries that carry the highest burden of malaria disease according to the world malaria report in 2017.

Swift action is required to get a global response against malaria because there is still a long way to go. A greater challenge of the fight against malaria lies in the hands of countries with the highest malaria burden.

WHO 2016-2030 target across the globe against malaria is for a malaria-free world. A target of reducing global malaria incidence and mortality of malaria rates by 90%. To achieve this target, the aggressive measure needs to be taken by countries with increasing malaria attack, with the universal coverage of the core malaria intervention for all population at risk.

This year’s world malaria day – ZERO MALARIA STARTS WITH ME aims at awakening individuals across the world to raise their hands and make a personal decision and commitment to saving millions of more lives.

It’s also a call for individuals to help communities with a higher burden of malaria to end the disease. It is a call for every individual to stand for this Cold War against malaria and not wait for the government to take personal precautions to end malaria and achieve the 2030 target.
