Oko Polytechnic In The News Again As NANS and The School Management Have A Face-Off! (Photos)

In the early hours of Thursday 9th May 2019, the members of the National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS) stormed the prestigious Federal Polytechnic Oko in response to the problem of the absence of Students Union Government and the alleged imposition of the caretaker committee to run the affairs of the Students Union Government.

The leadership of NANS zone B, comprising of South-East and South-South zone under the leadership of Comrade Okereke Godson C Bishop paid a visit to Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra State in a bid to resolve the many challenges that came as a result of an alleged vacuum in Students Union Government leadership of the institution.

According to the NANS Team leader, their visit was as a result of the series of distress calls they received from the students of the Institution over the poor state of student welfare and the Current State of the Student Union Government.

The team on arrival were warmly received by the management team of the institution after a short briefing by the school PRO, Mr. Obini and the Chief Security Officer ( CSO) of the institution, Mr. David Khaki.

However, the School’s management team led by the deputy Rector apologized for the unavoidable absence of the Rector due to an official engagement that she had outside the school.

During a closed-door meeting between the management of the institution and NANS Team , the NANS Team made their demands known , which are , the immediate removal of the Dean Of Students’ Affairs who the NANS officials alleged does not show enough concern to the plight of the students , the immediate conduct of the Students Union Government Election , that the harassment and extortion of students by Lecturers in the guise of buying textbooks should cease.

The management, in responce, intimated the NANS team that a panel has already been set up to investigate the trend of students extortion and harassment by lecturers, and also promised to punish any culpable lecturer.

In the case of the suspended union election, the school management team detailed the NANS team that the suspension was as a result of malpractices that was perpetrated by the Students Independent Electoral Committee (SIEC ) like alleged illegal disqualification of Contestants after collecting bribe from their preferred contestant.

The backup their claim, the school management produced the evidence of alleged payments made into the Bank accounts of members of SIEC, according to the school management, this development led to the arrest of the Chairman of SIEC by the school security, which led to the total cancellation of the election.

The school management however promised to conduct a fresh election after the semester exams which is expected to commence on 14th May 2019.

Although nothing was said about relieving the Dean Of Student Affairs of his post by the school’s management, anaedoonline.ng sampled the opinions of some students of the institution to know what they think about the demand for his sack.

A student who preferred to speak in anonymity expressed disgust at the demand, calling it “action of few mischievous students who want to use the NANS platform to smear the office of the DEAN”

The student explained that most students, especially past SUG officials and SUG aspirants, are very uneasy with the man because of his strong stance and high principle.

Continuing, the student said, “students’ Unionism should not be a conduit through which the SUG levies paid by the students will be siphoned by others in the name of being SUG officials. On many occasions, The Dean has demanded a refund of unaccounted money allocated to any office and made the official response to face the full weight of the law until every Kobo is refunded to the union’s purse.”

He further pointed out that no Dean of Students Affairs (DSA) since the inception of the school has outperformed the current DSA.

Another student told anaedoonline.ng that within 3 years the Reverend became the DSA, he has been able to erect a brand new SUG secretariat building complex, which was made possible after he blocked all the “holes” through which the Union officials embezzle the Union’s money.
