Anambra State Government Promises To Foot Medical Bills Of Victims
According to report, the Anambra state government has set up a probe panel to investigate last week’s collapse of a four-storey building under construction at 9, Ezenwa Street, Onitsha and another collapsed one-storey building at No. 44 Modebe Avenue in Onitsha.
The state commissioner for information and public enlightenment, Mr. C-Don Adinuba who made the disclosure over the weekend, stressed that the Governor Willie Obiano led government was keen to ascertain the immediate and remote causes of the building failure, including the caliber of persons and quality of materials used with a view of forestalling future reoccurrence.

Adinuba disclosed that members of the probe panel were drawn from the Nigeria Institute of Building, the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Anambra Raw Materials Testing Laboratory and the State Emergency Management Agency as well as the Nigeria Police Force.
According to him, Governor Obiano expressed regret at the collapse which led to the loss of lives including the site engineer as well as his appreciation towards the individual volunteers, the Nigeria Police Force, the National Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Anambra State Road Traffic Agency, the State Emergency Management Agency and the Red Cross as well as the Anambra State Road Maintenance Agency. He described them as heroes who proved that we live in a predominantly caring society.
In the same statement, the government of Anambra state also condoles the families and friends of the victims and promised that the state government will underwrite the medical bills of victims who are receiving treatment in the hospital.
A part of the statement reads; “The government appreciates the efforts of individuals and organizations that worked tirelessly to save the lives of victims of the building failure and ensure that the incident did not result in chaos. These individuals and organizations demonstrate continually that we are a caring society. This is in keeping with our philosophy and tradition of “onyeaghananwanneya,”.

It will be recalled that a site engineer and four laborers working at the site of the four storey building lost their lives when the structure collapsed on them last Wednesday, while six persons that were rescued from the rubble with various degrees of injuries.
However, barely 48 hours after the collapse of the four-storey building, another building situated at No. 44 Modebe Avenue, close to AMATAS secretariat, Onitsha also collapsed.
