Party war as Chief Chekwas splits UPP Anambra

UPP Anambra state working committee under the leadership of Mr. Chidebe N. Chibunna, the acting state chairman and a former house of Assembly aspirant who got the position after the resignation of the former chairman, Dr. Sylvester Igwilo, has raised alarm over the unconstitutional move of the national chairman and founder of the party Chief Chekwas Okorie, in destabilizing the Anambra State chapter of the party.

The National Executive Council had on Monday 20th May, released a statement on reconstitution of Anambra State working committee, which contains a list of 28 newly constituted state executive members of the Party signed by Chief Chekwas Okorie the National Chairman.

You can recall that we had published a report on that effect with the full list of the said newly constituted members.

Reacting to the release,
Mr. Chibunna, the elected Deputy chairman, now acting as the state chairman, in what he called personal-business-style of running a party, he alleged that Chief Chekwas must have a hidden motive in his move to unseat all members of the state working council of the party in the state following the resignation of the party’s state chairman, otherwise, how on Earth would a lettered person like chief Chekwas commit such constitutional blunder without any cause. No crises in the party, no court case or order to that effect, no issue of tenure expired, nothing! Yet he took to using his power and national executives as a rubber stamp to dissolve a whole state working committee that is a product of convention and set to announce a new list for the position.

Mr. Chibunna stated that a person of such national figure who ought to know the position of law, the party’s constitutional provisions, yet chose to act the way he has acted must have evil plan and his move will likely destabilize the party both in the state and other states.

While disclosing this during an interview with newsmen on Wednesday,
Mr. Chibunna expressed shock, that without any prior notice that the Chekwas’ national executives was set to announce a new list of state working committee and wondered how such members of the executive would emanate and which process was followed in producing them.

When asked by Anaedoonline.com if he would honor the decision of Chekwas and bow out, Mr. Chibunna responded that he was not the state working committee, rather by the virtue of his position, he was just a member. So, bowing out which had no legal or constitutional bearing on the state working committee should not surface. He also asserted that no matter how high a person was placed, his illegal moves and decisions should not be honored and if that was what Chekwas was expecting, he should have a rethink.

Then, on his next move, Mr. Chibunna told Anaedoonline.com that he didn’t have any move, but the SWC definitely had and would respond appropriately to Chekwas and his executives at the right time. He added that before the unholy move of the national chairman, that the state Executive members had earlier planned a state council meeting to deliberate the way forward after the resignation of the state chairman, but now this has come, it would be part of their deliberations.

Anaedoonline.com, probe to know if it would not tantamount to party disloyalty if they would go ahead with the scheduled meeting.

However, Mr Chibunna insisted that the people who should be guilty of any misdeed are the national executives who have gone against the party constitution. He told Anaedoonline.com that UPP Anambra state had only one exco under his leadership for now, pending when a substantial state chairman would emerge. He argued that whatever Chekwas is doing is a mere “joke”.

When asked his next move, he answered that when the state working committee meets, they would make the next move known, but, any move must be in tandem with the law and the party’s constitution.
