Massive Unfollowership From BBC Igbo Facebook page, See Why…..

By: Victor Ndubuisi and onyinnye Okeke

The British Broadcasting Corporation Igbo (BBC Igbo) yesterday being the 4th of June 2019, wished Igbo’s on their page happy “EID Mubarak” in commemoration of Muslims all over the world who are celebrating the feast. The friendly message did not go down well with many Igbo’s who backlashed the media outfit and unfollowed the media outfit Social media page.

A lot of people perceived it as being inappropriate and insensitive because Igbo’s are believed to be dominantly Christians. One Commenter wrote, ” Do Saudi Arabians wish Christians “Happy Christmas?” and another asked, “BBC News Igbo, Ndi Igbo ha so na ndi Alakuba?”. In a country where some Muslim extremists through Boko Haram terrorists and herdsmen/farmers crisis are becoming a norm, one can understand why most Igbo’s on their page were quick to disassociate themselves from the post.

In an attempt to pacify the angry followers, BBC Igbo deleted the controversial post yesterday and also reached out to their remaining followers to avoid such misconception in the future.
