June 12: Nigeria Celebrates National Day Of Democracy

 

Today, June Twelfth has been declared a national Day of Democracy by the federal government.

To this end, every June Twelve will feature a public holiday and celebration of democracy in commemoration of the June Twelve 1993 general election, in which Nigerians went to the polls and their votes counted in a peculiar Option A4 devices by Prof Humphrey Nwosu.

Speaking to the a news agency  in an interview, a legal practitioner Barrister Lucky Obahor described June twelve as a remarkable day in the country commending the president for recognising the day and the efforts of some Nigerians who sacrificed their lives to ensure that democracy takes effect in the country.

Barrister Obahor regretted that the country is not democratically matured as the arms of government are not independent and called on the executive arm of government to respect the rule of law as well as ensure full implementation of good policies for the good of the masses.

On his part, an Onitsha based business man, Chief James Asiegbu who maintained that the aim for observing the day is worthwhile, regretted that the heart desire of the political martyr, the late Chief Musheed Abiola concerning the poor masses is yet to be actualized, adding that so many Nigerians are hungry and unemployed.

He called on those in the leadership position to go back to the drawing board to strengthen the country’s economy for the benefit of the common man which the late Chief Abiola stood for.

In their separate reactions , a resident Mr. Chiedozie Umeh and a business man Pastor Mark Atabi commended President Buhari for having the political will to declare the day which his predecessors could not do, adding that the advent of June twelve 1993 ushered in the democratic government the country is enjoying since 1999 till date .

Correspondent, Emengini Osabede who felt the pulse of the people in Onitsha reports that the duo decried the security Challenges confronting the country and called on the federal government to

address the issue by placing capable hands to handle the security apparatus of the country to check the spate of killings and kidnapping in the country
