World Sickle Cell Day Celebration At Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital (Photos)
Anambra State joins the United Nations to celebrate the World Sickle Cell Day 2019 which is marked on 19th June of every year.
This year’s celebration
was held at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Neni.

The convener of this year’s celebration is Aisha Edward who is also the National Coordinator of the Association of People Living with Sickle Cell Disorder (APLSCD).

This year’s celebration is remarkable as the organization celebrated the recent Sickle Cell bill signed by the Anambra state Assembly.

Aisha in her speech appreciated the state government for their support financially and the love showered on APLSCD. Aisha also thanked the former governor of Anambra state, Mr. Peter Obi who has been supportive of the organization, she also thanked Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah, Oselokha Obaze for the bus and Sienna car they respectively gave to the group, she also thanked the church, especially the Aguata Diocese for their support and also prof. Stella Okunna for being a mother to them all.

She urged the government to do more towards sensitizing people about genotype and Sickle Cell.

The commissioner of Health, Dr. Vincent Okpala, and his amiable wife were present to represent Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano. The Commissioner made a promise that the State Government will look into establishing a rehabilitation center for Sickle Cell patients in the state and that the issue of electricity for NAUTH Neni, will soon be a thing of the past.

Also, the chief medical director(CMD) NAUTH, Dr. A.O. IGWEGBE who was represented by
Dr. Joseph Ugboaja, CMAC NAUTH, thanked all government parastatals for coming out to join in marking the day and also grateful for all their contributions to Aisha and her group.

He said NAUTH will always support the group in their own little way.
The representatives of former Anambra State governor , Peter Obi, Prof. Stella Okunna and Hon. Charles Chukuma hailed the Aisha Edward for her perseverance in pushing for the Rights of sickle cell patients in Anambra and Nigeria.
