Olive Sickle Cell Initiative Celebrates The World Sickle Cell Day In A Grand Style (Photos)

The Olive Sickle Cell Initiative, in a bid to mark the World Sickle Cell Day 2019 which comes up every 19th of June , moved to the streets of Onitsha to raise the awareness of genetic disorders endangering the lives of many.

The rally which commenced from the Obi of Onitsha’s palace, ended with the provision of genotype screening to the general public.

The rally featured a dance mob led by the Crown Light Dance Academy.

Over a hundred youths turned up to the event and in all, it was a great road show where people were encouraged to check their genptypes.

Persons with the disorder were enouraged to visit any Sickle Cell clinic for professional counselling and guidance.

It is important to note that the Olive Sickle Cell Initiative had some pre-event activities which includes;

– Opening a Sickle Cell Clinic at IyiEnu mission hospital , Ogidi.

– Visiting some secondary Schools on SCD awareness counseling to educate the students, especially the senior ones on sickle cell disorder and related issues like how to get counseling and medication.

– Radio program on City Radio 89.7FM to discuss Sickle Cell Disorder.

Speaking to anaedoonline.ng, the founder , Nonso Stanley Anene, enumerated that the Olive Sickle Cell initiative helps to reduce the incidence of sickle cell disorder in the society through four major ways; Education & Awareness, Advocacy, Psychological Support and Philanthropy.

He also informed that in the past few days, they have been able to go on school out-reach programmes and creating genotype awareness to senior secondary students.

Nonso further advised young people to endeavor to check their genotype before engaging in a serious relationship. He also advised that intending couples should do genotype screening before indulging in sexual activities in other not to victimize their offspring.
