Human Pain can be “Spiritual”, Emotional, Psychological and Physical – NAUTH doctor explains (Photos)

Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, today, 4th July 2019 held a 1-day training progamme (2nd Edition) in conjunction with American Cancer Association (ACS) and Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) for the staff of the health institution on how to manage patient’s pain with the theme:

“Pain-Free Hospital Initiative”

The Coordinator of the training programme, Dr. Orjiakor S.C who is also a Pain and Palliative Physician said the purpose of the programme is to create awareness for pain treatment.

In the course of delivering his part in the lecture series with the topic, “Introduction of Pain and Mechanism of Pain”, he explained that pain can be classified under physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual.

The Chief Medical Director of NAUTH, Prof. A.O Igwegbe who was represented by CMAC, Dr. Ugboaja Joseph. O. in his address thanked the FMOH and ACS for pioneering the initiative meant to improve the knowledge and skill of Health Care workers in pain management.

In his address, he told the staff that it will be his hope that after the training, they would have been empowered to adequately manage patients with pain. In assuring the staff on the management’s plan of this initiative, he wrote, “the management has established a logistic system that guarantees the steady availability of pain medicines, particularly, the Narcotics.”

The Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Dr. Ugboaja Joseph. O. (Ochinanwata) who is also the Director of Clinical Services, Research, and Training in NAUTH  narrated how the Pain and Palliative Care Unit NAUTH came about.

He said, “one person must be mentioned when we want to talk about this unit, that one person is Dr. Orjiakor S.C who must be singled out and commended”.

He continued “Dr. Orjiakor went for a pain management training program on his own and developed interest on it, he showed the passion for this and he was given the platform to bring in this development, and right now, you cannot talk about Pain Management without mentioning Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi”.

Dr. Ugboaja advised the staff who were selected across several departments of the institution to look inwards and develop his/her strength, that as their faces are different, so are their God-given gifts different, he also promised them that the management is ready to support such platforms and individuals to move forward for the betterment of NAUTH.

He further added that even if all the facilities and infrastructure are in place in NAUTH, there is but one thing that is key, which is staff’s attitude to patients, starting from the accounting personnel, to the nurses, doctors, etc.
