AFCON 2019: Former Super Eagles Captain Gives Reason Behind Super Eagles Win

Former Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo, has said that Gernot Rohr’s men defeated South Africa 2-1 at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nation, AFCON, quarter-final on Wednesday night because they were the ”dominant” team during the encounter.

He also hailed Arsenal star, Alex Iwobi and Villarreal winger, Samuel Chukwueze for their wonderful combinations that gave Nigeria the first goal.

Samuel Chukwueze gave Super Eagles a 1-0 lead at the break after an assist from Alex Iwobi.

However, Bafana Bafana leveled in the second half, thanks to Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decision.

With the match looking to head into extra time, William Troost-Ekong forced the ball over the line in the final minute of play.

“It was a very good goal and a good combination from Iwobi and Chukwueze,” Yobo told SuperSport in his post-match analysis.

“In the first half Nigeria did what they needed to do and got the early goal.

“In the second half Nigeria sat back a little bit too early and South Africa started putting Nigeria under pressure and they got the equalizer.”

“But what is more important is that we got the win at the end of the day. Nigeria didn’t give up, they kept fighting and kept believing that there is something at the end of the day and that they can go on and win the game, in the last minutes they showed great character and even though you know you are not playing well.”

“The free kick Etebo took was actually going in and the Bafana Bafana goalkeeper made that great save for them, if not, it would have been a 2-0.”

“I think it gives you more confidence going forward. Congratulations to Nigeria. They were the dominant team and here we are in the semi-finals.”
