Awka Butchers Want Anambra Govt To Construct Bumps On Kwata/Udoka link Road

The Kwata/Udoka link road was in very bad condition and had affected access to the market before the Anambra state government rehabilitated it in June.

Speaking to Newsmen, the chairman of the market, Chief Obiora Onyechi, called on the state government to assist them by constructing bumps on the road.

“We implore the state government under Governor Willie Obiano, to fix bumps on the road. We have witnessed a number of accidents on that road. The road is under construction but there is dire need to build bumps on it in order to avert re-occurrence. This is a big market and people troop in and out continuously.”

“In a special way, we thank Governor Willie Obiano for rehabilitating the Kwate/Udoka road, which cuts across our market. Presently, full business activity has returned; but our worry is the rising cost of cows and goats, which, in turn, affects the cost of meat, which is also affecting our customers. Presently, a cow costs between 250,000 and 300, 000”, he added.

Also speaking, the secretary of the market association, Mr. Chinwe Nwaogo, stated that accidents, which occur regularly along the said road are giving the butchers sleepless nights, and that only government intervention will save them.

“First of all, we must thank Governor Obiano for rehabilitating our road. Many governors have been in power in Anambra state, but none of them was able to repair the road until Obiano’s government come on board.”

“Regrettably, vehicles plying the road care less about the existence of the market. They speed as they like; and, sometimes, cause accidents. So, we urge the state government to assist us by constructing bumps on the road.”

“We want to also use this medium to ask the state government to initiate strict policies on revenue collection within all existing markets in the state. We wouldn’t want a repeat of what happened before whereby traders selling petty items are extorted huge amount of money on a daily basis,” she pleaded.

Nwoye Sunday Nwaokalanye, one of the traders in the market, while thanking Obiano for drilling borehole in the market, stressed the need for bumps to be constructed on the newly rehabilitated road to check accidents.
