Where the discussion bothered on the special work Anambra NEWMAP has done so far and issues of Gender Based Violence (GBV).

ABS programme moderator, Ify Unachukwu asked the two NEWMAP officers that were present at the radio talk; Blessing Okafor, Social and Livelihood Officer, and Emeka Achebe, Communication Officer how they have been able to build relationships with people in the communities they work.

In response, Emeka Achebe explained that they involve the community people because they see them as critical stakeholders. Any work carried out by NEWMAP is anchored for the betterment of the community, that is why NEWMAP engage focal non-governmental organization as a liaison between the community and NEWMAP, to ensure project buying.

He continued, “ we set up site committee, selected from community members in case of any irregularities going on at the site. There is also grievance address committee, Community Association and Opinion Box in all our work communities. All these are all mechanism provided for easiness in interaction with the community, ownership and sustainability of the project”.

On the issue of Gender-Based Violence, Blessing Okafor explained that since the nature of their work involves both male and female, measures were put in place to make the environment conducive for both sex. Sometimes there are conflicts in the course of work. Violence like gender favoritism in selecting workers for a site, physical and emotional abuse, sexual harassment during work, harsh treatment on female workers, female hawkers are harassed too and many others. There are also incentives that comes with the project for the community such as market/sales opportunities and others.

Emeka Achebe added some point on the topic saying that the most rampant of this GBV issue is the Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA).

He continued, “things like that might likely happen, that is why we set up these machineries so as to arrest such issues when they arise. We use many platforms to educate the people to watch out for signs of such abuses because all these workers when loaded with money might decide to do other funny things. We also engage community women on a focus group discussion to educate their girls about the dangers of falling victims of this abuse.’’
