Igbo Man Could Go To Prison Over Dog Attack On Neighbour

A businessman, Ikwuegbu Fitzgerald in a Kabusa Grade I Area Court, Abuja has been arraigned by Police on Wednesday for mindlessly handling his dog which resulted in the injury of his neighbour.

Mahmud Lawal, the Prosecution Counsel told the court that the accused perpetrated the offence on June 17.

Fitzgerald, who lives at Chika Village, Abuja was charged to court on two counts of causing grievous hurt and negligent conduct.

The prosecution counsel alleged that the accuser, Mrs Mercy Jeremiah, who lives in the same compound with Ikwuegbu, reported the matter at the Galadimawa Police station.

The prosecutor said the complainant reported that the defendant’s dog attacked and bit her on her hand, right leg and other parts of her body.

He further alleged that Ikwuegbu was fond of leaving his dog uncaged in the compound despite numerous pleas to either cage or chain the dog.

The prosecution counsel also told the court that Jeremiah spent N62, 000 to treat herself after the attack.

Lawal said the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 196 and 253 of the Penal Code law.

After the charge was read to him, the defendant pleaded not guilty.

The Judge, Aliyu Kagarko, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100, 000 each with one surety in like sum.

Kagarko ordered that the surety must be at least a Grade Level 10 Officer in the Federal Civil Service.
