Erosion Threatens Mgbuka Market: Goods worth millions of Naira lost

Erosion has continued to threaten many families and businesses in Nnewi, this time it has come knocking at Mgbuka Market where the recent out-break, affected about five shop owners at the old motor spare parts section.

The erosion at the Mgbuka market has been there for over ten years and in the past years, the erosion has pulled down many shops and is gradually creeping into the market.

According to the Chairman of the fairly used motor parts dealers association, Chinedu Enyiribe who narrated the incident to anaedoonline.ng, he said they came to the market this morning to realize that some shops were affected by the growing erosion in the market.

“Alot of the shop owners have been crying to me and I am appealing to the government to come to our aid. We need urgent assistance”.

Mr. Chinedu and the secretary General, Ude Celestine said they had reached out to the Federal House of Representatives member representing Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo, Hon. Chris Azubuogu, in December 2018 but he said he can only look into it after the elections.

Prior to meeting the Hon. Member, the Chairman attested that the Ecological committee from the Federal House of Representatives had visited earlier in 2018 through the efforts of Hon. Azubuogu but nothing has been done yet.

One of the shop owners affected by the recent tragedy, Mr. Livinus Ugo said he had only been to the market on Monday and the erosion happened on Tuesday evening.

He said, “I lost goods worth over five hundred thousand there, we are still calculating and removing the remaining goods from the shop. Many of the items were covered in red sand.”

Speaking further, he said, ” I am calling on the government to help us to stop this erosion so it won’t affect others and also for them to compensate us for our losses.”

Mr Emeka, another shop owner close to the erosion said that he was surprised to find out that his neighbour’s shop was no more. He said market leaders are trying their best but no help has come from the state government.

Some shops in Mgbuka Market are deserted by the owners as they fear for their lives.

The shop owners in Mgbuka have called on the Anambra state government to come to their aid to avert further damage.
