The attention of the National secretariat of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has been drawn to the recurring incident of armed robbery attacks at the female hostel of the University of Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State.
It is unspeakable and unacceptable that just in one week, armed robbers have invaded the female hostel twice without check and mindlessly robbed female students, wounding in the process those who resist them in their dastard mission.

This robbery gang does have enough time such that they dispossess the female students of their valuables such as; laptops, phones, gadgets, monies. The information further revealed the brazenness with which the terror gang come with POS and force students to insert their ATM cards and transfer their allowances to them.

While condemning in strongest terms this beastly act of the armed robbers, we wish to expressly request that the management of the University of Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State do everything humanly possible to arrest the perpetrators of the unabating terror incidences and prosecute them.

In the meantime, I have directed Comr. Ekemini Inyang, the NANS National Ex-Officio 1 to manage the crisis in order to avoid escalation or lead to a repeat of the June 12, 2013 students unrest in University of Uyo. Now that students have threatened a showdown, it is expected that all stakeholders should work together to avert disruption of the academic calendar.

Most importantly, we urge the management of the ivory tower to as a matter of urgency provide adequate security for the inhabitants of the female hostel and the entire school, to reassure the students of management’s commitment to their safety in the hostels and entire campus environs.

We share in the pains of those female students that are victims of this unholy incidence and wish to assure them of NANS readiness to bring this to an end.

In the same manner, NANS condemn the inter-tribal violence that erupted between students of Tiv and Jukun extraction at the Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State.

It is appalling, unthinkable and condemnable for students to abduct and kill each other over resolvable issues in an academic environment.
We hope that the management will swiftly bring the perpetrators to book so as to serve as a deterrent to others with similar sinister motives in our ivory towers. This ugly development is obviously saddening.

Students of both tribes should know that the academic environment such as a University is meant to engender integration, conviviality, and unity amongst others, that informs why it’s referred to the as universal entity. Resorting to violence against one another is nonetheless a defeat of the purpose for which learning and spirit of brotherliness can thrive.

Must Every Encounter End In Rape?

We plead that the management comes up with a deliberate social integration program that ultimately leads to a peaceful coexistence of students of both tribes and others within the school environment and outside, while both governments of Taraba and Benue call to order their wards in the Federal University to eschew violence.

I have therefore set up a high powered delegation to intervene and help in resolving these crises immediately.
