An Nnewi-born industrialist and philanthropist, Chief Louis Izuchukwu Carter Onwugbenu, has continued to restore hope to parents of quintuplets and quadruplets in the Southeast geo-political zone of the country with the adoption of new set quadruplets as part of his 66th birthday anniversary.
Onwugbenu announced the adoption of the quadruplets at St. Louis Catholic Church, Uruagu Nnewi, venue of the birthday celebration yesterday.
The philanthropist had earlier suspended activities earmarked for his birthday celebration, when his attention was drawn to the plight of the babies and their parents. He quickly dashed down to the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Anambra State, where the babies were delivered and offset their medical bills. He also settled the medical bills of 13 other families amounting to about N2 million during the visit.
The babies, three males and a female, who were reportedly delivered through Caesarean Section ( CS) were in good health when journalists visited them with the members of the Louis Carter Foundation. The excited lucky 35-year old civil servant and mother of the quadruplets, Mrs Nkechi Miriam Ibe, a staff of the Awka North Local Council of the state, had a three-year old girl before giving birth to the quadruplets.
Their father, Mr Ekene Ibe, who hails from Mbaitoli community in Imo State expressed gratitude to God for the gift of the children and also thanked Onwugbenu for his timely intervention.
Ibe, an Evangelist at the St. Barth’s Anglican Church, Umuezeagu Uruagu, Nnewi, said: “Immediately the babies were safely delivered, somebody came to where I was anxiously waiting and said to me congratulations father of four. I shouted Jesus! I was not expecting four at a go.

“Actually, we were told from the result of the scan conducted in one of the hospitals in Nnewi that the babies were three but to my greatest surprise they turned out to be four and that really threw me off balance.”Onwugbenu said he extended the gesture to the family as the latest addition to his Louis Carter Foundation because it gives him extra joy to restore hope to others and to glorify God Almighty for his blessings on him and his family.
“I see it as a call to service to humanity by God Almighty. After all, no one knows who will be what tomorrow,” he said. He called on other philanthropists and the government not to look the other way whenever they hear the cries of indigent members of society. Onwugbenu had since 1984 been intervening in similar situations with the adoption of the first set of quadruplets in Nsukka, Enugu State. They have all graduated from the university and were reportedly doing very well in their chosen endeavours.
In 2014, during his 61st birthday, he also adopted the Ezeudenyi quintuplets from Nnobi, Anambra State, while during his 65th birthday last year he took up the scholarship of the Odoh-Ezeugwu quintuplets from Nsukka. Onwugbenu did not know the Ibes who are the current beneficiaries, like the previous ones.
