Okpala Nnewi Performs ILO Mmuo Nnewi 2019 Rites (Photos)

Aka-ji-Ofor Nnewi, Chief Chiagozie Osunkwo of the Okpala Nnewi lineage performed sacred rites of ILO MMUO in obeisance to ndi mbu na ndi egede nke Nnewi (forefathers) at Obi Okpala Nnewi in Umunnealam, Umudim, Nnewi, Anambra State.

The ILO MMUO festival is a yearly event marked to remember the forefathers(Nnanyi) and Nnewi for everything they have done for the land. It is celebrated during the week of the Afiaolu festival.

The Okpala Nnewi started the ceremony by offering Ofe Onugbu (bitter leaf soup) and fufu(local dish), to the deity and ancestors one after the other. After that, he broke the kola nut and offered prayers to the ancestors. He called on all the ancestors, Idemili, Ulasi to come eat Kolanut.

He prayed for the well-being of Ndi Nnewi(Home and abroad), non-indigenes and the fruitfulness of the land. He asked the non-indigenes to abide by the holy rules of Nnewi (nso Nnewi). He prayed that Ndi Nnewi should return home so they can unite and build Nnewi.

During the ceremony which took place yesterday, 29th of August 2019, all the worshippers came forward with offerings and Okpala Nnewi prayed for each of them individually.

There were so many guests from within and outside, the Otu Umuada Edo and Umu Ezeamulunana Ezenwanyi were well represented as they sang and danced their hearts out in praise to the deities.

The Isi-Ana Nnewi, High Chief priest Obiajulu Udoye, was present with his entourage in solidarity with Okpala Nnewi, also the Nnewi Youths led by Paul Moneke were present at the event, the Nzukora Nnewi President, Chief Ugochukwu Udemezue(Ifeneti) was present. Other guests include; Benson Obi, Isi Ulasi, Ube characha, Humphrey Obimma, Odozi-Ana Nnewi, Obiego na China, Ozone, Ogbuefi Agubanze Nnewi, Ezike Okonkwo and many others.
The event was anchored and planned by Mc Abaa Nig who held the audience spellbound.

There was Masquerade display from masquerades like; Ajo-Ofia, Mmawu Ndi Agulu(Ezezuo), Ajo nunu from umuezeoka in Nnewi, Orimiri, Nwa-nnsi Okpunegbu, Odogwu Awka-etiti, Ikpuru Adazi-nnukwu, Ekwikwi, Mmawu Umuenem, Ijele Ezenwanyi, Ezejiofor from Abu or Nnewichi and many others.


The event had Nnewi indigenes at home and abroad present, adults, kids, and everyone watched in delight as all the Masquerade displayed to the delight of the audience.

Mr. Tony Ogbonna Umunakwe Atueyi in an interview with anaedoonline.ng, threw more light on the essence of Ilo Mmuo, “Chief Chiagozie Osunkwo of the Okpala Nnewi lineage in Umunnealam is the spiritual head of the Nnewi. ILO MMUO is a remembrance of our heritage. It is not fetish or heinous. It can be likened to what the Orthodox church called All Saints and All Souls”.

In another Interview with Ichie Ikenna Chukwujife, the Isi Ulasi(Aka ji Ofor Uru), “We are here to abide by the custom and tradition(Omenaala) of the Land and everything is in order.”

As regards to security during the event, the Nigeria police force and Nnewi Vigilante was present to ensure maximum security.
