With about five buildings already swallowed, fear has gripped residents and traders in Nnewi following the devastating effect of the gully erosion at 100-Foot Road Nnewi.

It will be recalled that Anaedoonline has made several reports concerning the threatening effect posed by 100-Foot Road Nnewi.

A visit by our correspondent today has shown that the gully erosion has not only expanded but several other houses and shops are also on the verge of collapse.

From on the spot assessment, it appears the gully erosion expansion cannot be far removed from the effect of the heavy rainfall.

It is important to recall that the Special Adviser to the Governor of Anambra State on Budget and Implementation, Hon. Sir Melie Onyejepu, on Tuesday, 4th June 2019, while speaking to Anaedoonline.com during his visit to the erosion site, assured the community that Anambra State Government and World Bank using the NewMap initiative are already working out modalities towards ensuring that the erosion problem is addressed. He assured that work will commence at the erosion site before the end of the year.

Also, the Member Representing Nnewi North, Nnewi South, and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency, Hon. Engr. Chris Emeka Azubuogu has also brought the attention of the Federal Government to the gully erosion site.

Coming under Matter of Urgent Public Importance on Ecological Threat of Nkwo-Edo Market, The Industrial /Commercial Hub of Anambra State, Hon. Chris Azubuogu, on May 30th, 2019, urged the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Ecological Fund office to mobilize their Engineers to the site to avoid further loss of lives and properties.

Also, he urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to as a matter of urgency provide needed support to those who have lost their shelter and businesses and also mandated the Joint Committees on Environment, Ecological Fund, and NEMA to ensure compliance.

Last week, NEMA and other government agencies visited Nnewi to access the damages caused by the erosion.

For the Member Representing Nnewi North, Hon. Nonso Okafor (Smart), he has also through a motion called the attention of the State Government to the gully erosion site, saying that it has become a terrible site.

Speaking to Anaedoonline, a trader, Mr. Chibuike, lamented about the neglect of erosion site, according to him, if the government had intervened earlier, the erosion should have been controlled.

For Mr. Timothy Ugwu, he admitted the government’s intervention through palliative but insisted that the efforts did not prove adequate to arrest the threat of erosion.

Speaking also, Joy Chukwuma, expressed her fear over the expansion of the erosion, according to her, businesses in the area is already threatened. She blasted the government for their negligence.

For Mr. Mike, a commercial motorcycle owner was of the opinion that nobody should be blamed, according to him, the erosion was caused due to the neglect of Nnewi deity ‘Edo’ which he said was angry.
