The Member Representing Nnewi North Constituency in Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Nonso Okafor (Smart), has called for government intervention over the threatening flood upsurge in some parts of Nnewi.
Hon. Nonso Okafor made the call yesterday, Thursday, 3rd of October, 2019, during the plenary session of Anambra State House of Assembly, where he sponsored a motion under Matter of Urgent Public Interest, calling on the state government to urgently create measures to tackle the flood menace.
Presenting the motion, Hon. Nonso Okafor called on the Executive Governor of Anambra State, His Excellency, Chief Dr. Willie Obiano to come to the aid of Nnewi and provide a lasting solution to the deadly flooding and erosion menace ravaging the town.
According to the lawmaker, many residents of the town have lost properties and other valuables worth millions of Naira to flood and erosion.

Speaking further, Nonso Okafor urged the state government to send relief materials through the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to affected residents, saying that this will help provide succour to displaced persons.
He however pleaded with the state government to release funds for the construction of drainages, clearing and proper channeling of existing ones and demolition of structures built on waterways in Nnewi to avoid further occurrence.
It will be recalled that following the aftermath of the negative impact of torrential rainfall of Friday, 27th September, 2019, Hon. Nonso Okafor on Saturday 28th September, visited some Nnewi residents who were greatly affected and displaced by flood, promising legislative response.
