In my years on earth, I have come to learn that no one is perfect and in the same way, no group of people is perfect. While the Igbo people are far from perfection, they are being viewed in a very harsh light.

The world we live in today has brought harsh realities to everyone and so this makes the quest to stay on the right track very difficult. I do not mean to give excuses for the acts carried out by my people but I would like to point out that an ailing country like Nigeria provides a breeding ground for all kinds of crimes.

As a result, people try to succeed quickly by cutting corners and engaging in questionable acts, this has earned the tribe a bad reputation.

There are two sides of every coin but it seems that the foreigners are only interested in viewing us from the battered and broken parts of the coin. However, if you look closely you would see that the Igbo people exhibit the following.

• Industrious: More than anything, they are hardworking and are always willing to go the extra mile to ensure that they make ends meet. They are a group of people who do not wait for things to be handed down to them, they work to earn their keep.

In Igbo land, even children born into rich families work hard to prove themselves worthy of being birthed into such families.

• The economy builder: Someone once said that if you visit any state or city in the country and you do not see a good number of the Igbos then it’s a sign that businesses do not really thrive in such areas. This is an irrefutable fact. They are always focused on creating their own jobs so that they do not have to rely on the whims of their employers. they are entrepreneurs

• Innovators: They constantly seek to solve solutions to problems as well as create new things. A good example is Chief Dr. Innocent Chukwuma, the chip off the old block, an example of how innovative the Igbo people can be

• Goodness: They are hospitable and good people in every sense of the word, always willing to give back to their community.

In truth, the easterners have not been given enough opportunities to show the world who exactly they are, one of the reasons is the media blackout in the southeastern states and so they have been judged in their absence by a lot of people who do not even understand what it is they stand for.

One of their most represented symbols is the “Ikenga” that signifies their strength and even though they are perceived as “crooks” in the eyes of some foreigners, they would never let their perception change who they truly are. They would push on till the whole world feels their strength and goodness.
