The foundation of the school was laid in the year 1948. The school started as a mission school. The first Priest who worked in the school was Revd. C. Mbaogu.

Mr. Gabriel Muojike, a native of Nkpoka-Nnewichi, donated the piece of land on which the school building was erected free of charge. In those days, the school building was constructed using mud with a small door as the only entry and exit. Now, it has five sections with many doors for entry and exit.

The first person to be appointed as the first headmaster/headmistress of the school in the year 1949 was Mr. Robinson Okwunalu. We are not surprised why the school was named Nnewichi Primary School because it was the first school in Nnewichi. It was the only school at that time attended by children from Abubor, Odida, Obiofia, and others.

Since the inception of the school, there has been 13 Headmaster/Headmistress that have headed the school. The 14th Head Of School (Headmistress), is Mrs. Ifeoma Onumaegbu; She has helped the school grow in a different spheres and has led the pupils to win different laurels for the school.

Many prominent scholars have passed through the school. They are as follows, Justice Nwizu, Sir. Dr. Goddy Agbasi, Barr. Oseloka Osigwe and many more. These are people that have proven their mettle in the society and have made their alma mater (Nnewichi Central School) proud.
