There was pandemonium in Ikpakaputa in the Ideato North Council Area of Imo State, as a primary school in the area, Arondizuogu Community School 2, Amazu Ikpakaputa, collapsed.

Though no life was lost in the incident, the building was said to have been reduced to rubble.

The incident occurred after an auditorium in the Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpala campus of the Imo State University, built by the state government collapsed in a similar circumstance.

Speaking during a visit to evaluate the extent of the damage, the state Commissioner of Education, Prof. Viola Onwuliri, thanked God that no life was lost in the incident.

The commissioner observed that the building collapsed due to the poor quality of work and inferior materials used for its construction.

She said, “I have also noticed that the building has neither pillars nor German floor and the blocks used was made of more sand than cement. However, I assure staff and students that Governor Emeka Ihedioha will salvage the situation by requesting the Nigeria Society of Engineers to conduct integrity tests on all buildings.

“This is not the first and maybe probably not the last structures built by Senator Rochas Okorocha that would collapse. One part of the first inland bridge also built by the Okorocha’s administration to connect Wethderal Road to Nekede, caved in a couple of months ago.”

She also noted the collapse of anti-racial rock and waterfalls constructed by the Okorocha’s administration at the Freedom Square.

“We can’t fail to mention major structural defects noticed on the Concorde Hotel Junction tunnel, the Orji and Akwakuma flyover and so on, which had prompted the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria to warn Imolities to stop making use of them,” she added.

When contacted on the telephone, the media aide to Okorocha, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, said it was not the new one storey building built by the former governor that collapsed.

“It was one of the old bungalow schools previously built that collapsed. No school built by Okorocha has collapsed in recent times,” he added.
