It is that time of the year before Christmas when buyers are inundated with mouthwatering offers and unbelievable discounts on almost everything they purchase online ranging from soups to nuts. Why most clairvoyant buyers understand that these are psychological tricks to coerce them into spending money on things they don’t need, other buyers still fall for the tricks.

Black Fridays excite everyone but the word has some ugly roots. Philadelphia Police had coined the word to describe the bedlam that took place in the streets after Thanksgiving celebrations when many buyers and tourists flooded into the city, causing accidents and mayhem.

Away from the little history, we know you have waited all year for the Black Friday to arrive, here are some tricks retailers use in swaying buyers this period; watch out and avoid them if you can.

1. They feature products that appeal to emotions

Advertisers always use emotions as a gear lever during this season to attract buyers. They do this with adverts and other online and offline marketing campaigns that appeal to your emotions. Some go as far as using the phrase “Show your girlfriend how much you love her by getting her this iPhone 11 on discount this Friday

There is a faux believe that it is this period one can only afford to spend on luxury goods without pinching the pocket, but that’s not true. Selling is all about emotions and retailers know how to use it as a great weapon this season.

2. They Put Up Limited Choices

Those flashy sneakers you may eye to purchase this season might be out of stock or have you not considered it? Say an ad keeps popping on your laptop or phone screen with over 50% slash in the sale and you finally clicked, chances are that the available product may be limited on the site. If it’s a pair of shoes, the sizes available might not be extra-large and if it’s a phone, it might not be the exact colour or it may lack the specifications you need. What the seller has done is click-baiting you onto his site.

He then shows you similar products and most times you end up purchasing something before leaving his site. Physical stores also do this, only to end up being crestfallen when you walk in to discover that it was all a ploy to get you into the store.

3. They put up products they have difficulty selling

A retailer who has difficulty selling a particular product can let the particular product go for anything this season. Just like people clear the cache in their browsers, they clear all inventories difficult to sell. But be careful. Many people have bought expired products this season and many haves also bought products that ended up causing a fight between the retailer and the buyer. Be careful.

4. They instil fear in you

You will see messages like only a few items left, buy now, Is your shopping list ready for the season? While these are marketing terms people use in selling, it is also good you understand that you are being rushed. You develop the fear that the product may not be available tomorrow at the same price and that feeling makes you click the buy button in fear.

5. Unbelievable Offers

Now comes the screamer, ‘Buy 2 get 1 free’, ‘buy 1 and get 50% off on the second item you purchase on our site’. Buyers find deals like this irresistible without knowing that the retailer is playing on consumers’ psyche.

This is the hidden secret behind these offers: Since it’s always a double offer, chances are that you are billed more on the costliest products and offered a discount on the cheaper products. You also end up buying multiple items, some of which you don’t really need, but you want to take advantage of the discount offered on the second item.

Look closely; you may not end up saving 50% or 20% as you were promised. The way to find out is by knowing the net value of what is discounted. Ensure you do the arithmetic in your head before going for such deals.  Don’t make a hasty decision. Christmas season sales are around the corner, don’t purchase what you don’t need because of black Friday. There will always be more promo sales in the future.
