As Nigeria battles to achieve the 2025 target of eradicating open defecation, environmental health experts in the country are worried over the multiple health implications of the menace.

Dr. Samuel Akingbehin, National President, Environmental Health Officers Association of Nigeria (EHOAN), has said the nation’s record as number one in the global index of open defection, as well as the socio-environmental implications of the practice demanded urgent actions.

He disclosed that eradicating open defecation in the country would dominate discourse during the forthcoming 51st National Scientific Workshop and 2nd International Conference On Environmental Health, scheduled to hold in Kano on Wednesday, December 4, 2019.

The conference, themed: “Open Defecation free community: A key to achieving sustainable health, social and environmental SDGs in Nigeria”, he explained would provide an opportunity for professionals and other environmental health stakeholders to brainstorm on effective strategies to stop the practice.

Akingbehin, who decried the unguided behaviour of some members of public, advocated the application of the extant laws against open defecation.
