Some students of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) have sparked outrage on social media after they were spotted on camera physically assaulting one of their colleagues.
On Saturday, video clips had emerged on the internet, where a group of five students — one male, four females — were seen beating a female 100 level student in her room.
The management of the institution took swift action on Sunday, announcing the suspension of all the students involved in the assault.
In a statement issued by Adegbenro Adebanjo, FUTA’s deputy director, corporate communications, the varsity said it has also begun an investigation into the circumstances that led to “the odious and unfortunate act”.
The development has since provoked outrage on social media platforms, especially Twitter, where users have demanded grave punishments — like the “immediate expulsion and prosecution of the culprits”.
“How can you treat your fellow human being like that, those FUTA students that beat that young girl up are terrible and they should be jailed,” a Twitter user said.
“These animals should be expelled and jailed afterward. I saw that video and it broke my heart. Why? If they are not expelled, I’ll personally sue the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) .. won were,” Dotun, Nigerian OAP said.
