The Governor of Edo State, His Excellency Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki stands out as a performing governor and one of the best governors in history (if not the best) that has ever governed Edo State.
The governor’s achievements speak volumes and it can be seen in areas of development ranging from infrastructure, human capital, education, Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and industry to agriculture.
Due to his scintillating performances, the governor has been tagged the “Wake and See Governor” and as the name implies the governor is seen delivering developmental projects in Edo State without engaging in prior fanfare and unnecessary rhetoric.
Governor Obaseki has pioneered a number of policy reforms that saw the state restructure its public finance, secure funding for infrastructural development and improve the business climate to attract investment in power, agriculture and other critical sectors.
Obaseki is instrumental in attracting the Edo-Azura power project, with support from the World Bank to the state. The completion of the AZURA Power plant is expected to generate 450mw in addition to the existing 450mw plant. Governor Obaseki is a God sent a leader to Edo State as seen in his development-oriented reforms and enactment of projects geared towards making the state an industrialized area and investment hub.
The developmental stride of the governor is conspicuous in the Benin river port project (Gelegele Seaport), the Benin industrial park, modular refinery project, technology hubs and Edojobs. Since assuming duty as Executive Governor of Edo State on 12 November 2016, Mr. Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki has executed a number of social development initiatives in addition to infrastructural projects.
In line with his commitment to develop a viable primary healthcare system and provide affordable/accessible health care services to the people of the state, Governor Obaseki has proposed to build about 200 Primary Healthcare Centres and provide a state-backed health insurance scheme to meet the health needs of Edo people.
Obaseki launched the Edo Basic Education Transformation (Edo BEST) programme, an initiative design to train and equip public school teachers with requisite skills and expertise for deploying Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in classrooms to improve learning outcomes.
He also revamped the Government Science and Technical College (formerly Benin Technical College) to train the workforce in a bid to solve the problem of dearth of technical skills and technological competence in the state.
The Benin technical college is now rehabilitated and ready to provide manpower and employment to the youths. In addition, the governor contributed immensely to the fight against human trafficking and illegal migration just as he carried out a massive reconstruction of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium to prepare for the state to host the 2020 National Sports Festival.
The governor’s record in terms of youth empowerment, provision of funds to medium and small-scale enterprises and investment in sports, arts and craft is remarkable. Governor Obaseki has kept to his promise when he said with his 10-point programme, Edo State would have become the cynosure of all eyes by the time he is done.
As the pilot of Edo State affairs, Governor Obaseki has transformed the social-political and economic landscape of the state with a magical wand in such a short time he assumed the saddle of leadership. No wonder, he earned the popular sobriquet of ‘Wake and See’ governor.
Obaseki’s governance style is not that of noisemaking but one of goal setting, strategic planning, thoughtful action, result actualization and feats consolidation. The pace at which projects are being idealized and executed across the three senatorial districts of the Edo state is a record that can hardly be broken.
Edo state, hitherto known as a civil service state prior to the advent of this administration, has today become an emerging industrialized state. The governor leadership style has tripled the state’s internally generated revenue and positioned Edo as one of the most promising states in the country.
Governor Obaseki’s sterling performance can be seen is roads construction and rehabilitation, schools renovation and equipping, human resource training and development, as well as empowerment. One of the roads he fixed that thought a herculean task for a state government is “Lucky Way”. He made the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and State Employment and Expenditure for Results (SEEFOR) active at work in Edo State.
The governor has worked and is still working in Edo North, South and Central. He is constructing roads in Ekpoma, Ewu and Afuze just to mention but a few.
Under Governor Obaseki’s administration, Edo State has witnessed massive infrastructural and socioeconomic development as evidenced in the rehabilitation of 45 roads across the state, restructuring of the Universal Basic Education Board, introduction of the Geographic Information System (GIS) for capturing land and houses in the state to ease issuance of certificate of Occupancy (C of O), and commissioning of 75 new intra-city buses to boost the state transportation services, revamp of the Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA), rehabilitation of feeder roads across the state, construction of an ultra-modern bus terminal and prohibition of street trading amongst others.
Obaseki is delivering the dividends of democracy in Edo State especially at a time many governors are complaining that there is no money and they are unable to pay salaries. He has developed the creativity to attract resources and meaningful development to the state. Edo state is in safe hands with Godwin Obaseki piloting the affairs of the state.
Supporting him to govern for a second term in office is synonymous with getting Edo State to becoming prosperous and truly attaining the status of the Heartbeat of Nigeria. Support the “wake and see governor”, His Excellency, Godwin Nocakes Obaseki, the Executive Governor of Edo State, for a second term in office.
