Food Borne Diseases Is A Major Global Public Health Concern – WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed worry that more than 200 diseases are caused by unsafe food containing harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites, and chemical substances.

The apex health organization gave the terrifying figure in its latest estimate of the global burden of foodborne diseases released on Saturday.

It said that foodborne diseases are also leading causes of diarrhea and cancer, hence constitute a significant global public health concern.

“Foodborne diseases are caused by types of bacteria, viruses, parasites, toxins, and chemicals. Others are much more common in middle-and and law-income countries.

“But in a globalized world, they can spread quickly along the food chain and across borders,” said WHO.

It, however, emphasized that foodborne diseases are preventable, noting that everyone has a role to play to achieve safer food for all.

The Organization then initiated a campaign for safe food tagged: “preparing food? Make sure it’s safe!”
