Anambra Community Jubilates As Buhari Inaugurates Erosion Control Projects

It was jubilation galore on Monday in Umunze, Orumba South local government area of Anambra state following the commissioning and handing over of erosion flood control and road improvement works by President Mohammadu Buhari.

The project, which is one of the 19 Federal government’s ecological intervention projects, for the first quarter 2018 was awarded by the Federal Executive Council in July 2018.

The residents, including men and women, trooped out in their numbers to welcome the entourage of Minister of State for Environment, Chief Sharon Ikeazor, who represented the President at the occasion.

Speaking on behalf of the community, President, Umunze Progressives Union, John Akanyenu expressed appreciation to the Federal government for intervening in the erosion menace which had posed serious danger to the area.

He said: “Accessing our ancestral home had been a serious challenge because of the erosion that has ravaged our community.

“We’re no longer cut off from our bona-fide home with the federal government intervention. I’m sure our ancestors are happy wherever they are, and we are happy too.”

He pledged the communities’ readiness to ensure steady maintenance of the project to ensure its durability.

Commissioning the project on behalf of the President, Minister of State for Environment, Chief Sharon Ikeazor, said the intervention would bring a huge relief to the community stressed by ecological challenges over the years.

She was also optimistic that the living standard of the people of the area would be enhanced following the completion of the project.

“The approval of this project by Mr. President is a testimony to the present administration promise that no part of the country will suffer any neglect owing to its geographical location or political consideration.

“To further consolidate on the gains of this giant stride, the federal government’s execution of projects across the country also demonstrates the sincerity of purpose of the Buhari led administration towards entrenching justice, equity and fair play to all and sundry,” she added.

Anambra Governor Chief Willie Obiano regretted the quantum of landmass the state had lost to gully erosion over the years.

Obiano, represented by his deputy, Dr Nkem Okeke, regretted the quantum of land mass the state had lost to gully erosion, which he said had reduced her second smallest state in the country.

While thanking the federal government for her support to the state, the governor cautioned residents against improper disposal of refuses and to desist from building on food plains.
