Anambra Govt Begins Demolition Of Buildings Affected By Onitsha Fire Disaster

Anambra State government has commenced the demolition of buildings affected by the Ochanja market fire disaster.

Government House correspondent, Ejike Abana reports that officials of the State Physical Planning Board, led by its Executive Chairman, Barrister Chike Mmaduekwe paid a visit to the site, were it was gathered that one of the compromised buildings collapsed on December twenty-sixth last year, though nobody was hurt.

Some of the yet to be demolished buildings have cracks and can collapse at anytime thereby posing danger to life and property of Ndi Anambra.

Two excavators were engaged by the State government to
pull down the structures which also appear very old, while officers of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra, OCHA BRIGADE helped to maintain law and order in the area.

Barrister Mmaduekwe in his remarks, said that the effort is in keeping with Governor Obiano’s human oriented governance, stressing that the Board will continue to ensure controlled building development across the state.

He said that after the demolition and evacuation of debris, Anambra State government will plan the spot for the private developers to put up their structures.

Some owners of the buildings including, Mr. Chinedu Okonkwo and Chief Charles Udegbe expressed gratitude to Governor Willie Obiano-led administration for its response and efforts towards their plight since the unfortunate fire incident of June last year.

Also speaking, Mr. Praise Ngonadi called on government to put more efforts in enforcing sanitation laws of the State, to compel citizens into disposing refuse appropriately, as a measure to avert fire or flood incidences from re-occurring in the future.

General Manager of the State Physical Planning Board, Mr. Nwabufo Anene, among others were part of the exercise.
