Anambra To Punish Teachers Flogging Pupils For Speaking Igbo

The Anambra State Government has asked teachers in the state to reinvigorate the teaching of the Igbo Language in schools.

The state government warned that teachers fining or flogging pupils for speaking Igbo would be dealt with.

The state Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs, Culture & Tourism, Ms. Sally Mbanefo, gave the warning at a workshop for the revival of Igbo in Awka on Friday.

She reminded the teachers of the law making it compulsory for pupils in the state to dress in traditional attire and speak their native language in school every Wednesday.

Mbanefo said Governor Willie Obiano was out to save our native language from extinction.

Also in same vein, with the aim to make sure the Igbo Language doesn’t die, the Imo State Government has made the teaching of Igbo language compulsory in schools in the state.

The state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Viola Onwuliri, who spoke during the matriculation ceremony of the State College of Nursing and Midwifery, Orlu, said the learning and teaching of Igbo language would be compulsory for all students in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions in the state.

Represented by the Director of Tertiary Education, Basil Iwu, the commissioner urged parents and guardians to teach their children and wards our language.

The commissioner said, “We have resolved to make the Igbo language a compulsory subject in schools in Imo State. We believe our children need to know their roots and we can encourage that by teaching them our language which is our heritage in schools.

Parents and guardians should equally teach their children and wards the language at homes.”

She urged the provost to ensure that the native tongue was made a compulsory language at the school of nursing.
