The Lagos government says motorcycles popularly called Okada and tricycles also known as keke napep have not been banned in the state. The government clarified that the operators have only been restricted in six local government areas in the state.
The government stated that it implemented sections of the 2018 traffic law which ensures okadas and kekes don’t ply major highways and bridges. Majority of Lagosians have been complaining that the ban is harsh.
The Lagos state commissioner for information and strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, who was represented by the ministry’s permanent secretary, Sina Thorpe, made the clarification on Thursday, February 6.

He said areas that had fallen under restrictions accounted for less than four million commuters, a figure less than 12 percent of Lagos’ projected population of 27 million. Also present at the event was the commissioner’s executive assistant on new media and public relations, Micheal Fafore.
Meanwhile, a family was thrown into mourning on Thursday, February 6 in Lagos as their little child became the latest victim of the ban on Okada in Lagos. The pupil, a girl, was killed after being hit by a stray bullet during a clash by police and Okada riders in the Iyana-Ipaja area of the state.
