Emeka Ohanemere a.k.a. “Odumeje” requires the services of etiquette professionals to instill an acceptable level of public comportment in Him because from all indications, there are chances that he has refused to learn the art of good behavior for the Holy Spirit.

This is suffice to say that it is His lack of exposure and comportment especially in public areas that paved way for His embarrassment some days ago when He was shoved aside by a security detail of Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

By standards of protocol, no one walks up to a governor or a political office holder entitled to security details for a handshake or pleasantries unless beckoned to do so by the governor or that politician.

On the event that the politically exposed persons is familiar with the fellow who desires the meet, protocol demands that the fellow stands within the line of sight of the exposed persons and waits to be beckoned on.

This is where the drama king of Onitsha failed.

In August 2019, I and a prominent Nigerian from Kogi State were guests at the Abuja residence of Prince Engr. Arthur Eze on a fine morning. On arrival, He was having tea with Hon. Tony Nwoye and a second individual.

We waited till He asked that we joined Him.

In the course of our meeting but at different times, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, His Excellency, Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State and a third guest arrived.

Vintage Prince Engr. Arthur Eze, He introduced the powerful men loudly but understanding the dictates of protocol, we received each introduction with a smile and nod.

In exchange for His show of class and cultural panache, I ensure to keep hailing Him with His numerous honorifics at intervals.

The only exchange of handshake happened after He introduced the third visitor who though a powerful Nigerian, walked up and extended his hand for a handshake.

It didn’t matter that some of these guests were already known to me but protocol is what it is.

I’ve had several experiences including when introduced to High Chief Raymond Dokpesi and His in-law, Kenny Ogungbe at the home of a former Nigerian President who also introduced me to His son.

My usual reaction is usually a nod and smile until familiarity is built beyond a level.

If nothing else, this drama king owes Himself an obligation to seek knowledge not necessarily by acquiring classroom education but this time, by applying more wisdom and gentleness in His dealings.

His lack of basic education is no excuse because the man in the Synagogue, Temitope Balogun Joshua and His counterpart at the Scripture Union, Uma Ukpai though lacking in paper qualification have over time achieved a higher dimension of wisdom and knowledge which is the exclusive preserve of persons who read the Holy Bible with understanding not for transactional Christianity.

Before the advent of Christianity, the indigenous Igbo people conducted themselves and were led by the ethoes of Uche, Uchu and Egwu Chukwu. These were the fundamental principles that underscored the Igboness of a professed Igbo man or woman.

The concept of Uche gives off the typical Igbo man as a rational and deep thinker not one who acts on impulse or for the fun of acting.

Uchu emphasizes the attribute of due diligence and thoroughness. It means that an indigenous Igbo man is required to at all times be diligent and thorough in His conduct not excluding applying himself or herself to the laws governing any enclave wherein He or She exists in at all times.

Egwu Chukwu is the fear of God which must reflect in all our dealings. It is remotely linked to the philosophy of Ikwu Aka Oto all of which emphasizes a need to be upright.

Unfortunately, citizen Emeka Ohanemere and His ilk are fast eroding these values that made us as Ndi Igbo an indomitable people.

His style of administering salvation creates a straight impression that Uche, Uchu and Egwu Chukwu are antiquated and as such should not play any role.

To be precise, He(Odumeje) emphasizes that money is the answer to all questions and is supreme as a result of which it must be obtained at all costs against an increasing number of clergy men like Kola Ayeye and Paul Enenche now demand to know the profession and nature of business of individuals who contribute money to “mission work”.

This is a harmful narrative in a south east that is fast been polarized between the haves and have nots.

Whereas this may not be his(Odumeje) actual intention but it is my view that Levites and members of the clergy must at all times be mindful of their utterances and conducts in the public in recognition of the truth that at all times, the viewing or listening audience are made up of people with different levels of understanding.

False accusations are normal against professed men and women of the clergy but what readily comes to mind is if or not there is a nexus between the lifestyle and attitude of the accused and the accusation.

May there not be a scandal of ritual killing, narcotics smuggling or organized robbery in God’s house.

A great number of youth of southeast origin are currently operating in the various killing fields in South Africa, Latin America and Europe all in the name of doing “deals” that produce money.

In our hearts, we know the nature of these deals but choose to pretend.

As difficult and bloody as these terrains are, there is a large army of men and women back home whose quest for wealth by all means is fueled by the conduct of figures like Emeka Ohanemere; desperately looking for an opportunity to join the “lines”.

May God save us from what the South East will be when this generation of dealers retire and return.
