As defined by wikipedia, corruption is a form of dishonesty or criminal offense undertaken by a person or organization entrusted with a position of authority, to acquire illicit benefit or abuse power for one’s private gain. Corruption may include many activities including bribery and embezzlement.

Hypocrisy according to wikipedia is the contrivance of a false appearance of virtue or goodness, while concealing real character or inclinations, especially with respect to religious and moral beliefs; hence, in a general sense, hypocrisy may involve dissimulation, pretense, or a sham.

Hypocrisy is the practice of engaging in the same behavior or activity for which one criticizes another. In moral psychology, it is the failure to follow one’s own expressed moral rules and principles.

There’s an igbo adage that says a pregnant woman can only vouch for the child in her womb and not the one she is carrying on her back. This absolves the pregnant woman of connivance and creates room for fair hearing.

In today’s Nigeria, the FG vouches for both they baby in their womb and the ones they are backing. The President, AGF is quick to shield the ones the are carrying on their back. They shield their corrupt from any allegation what sover or fair hearing. I call this institutionalized corruption.

Just in the same manner former President Goodluck Jonathan shielded now Senator Abba Moro when thousands of Nigerians were scammed and a few died during ill conceived non existent immigration job.

Its no longer news security has collapsed in the country. Nigerians have completely lost faith in the Federal Government to secure lives and property. A government being run by hypocrites who consistently lie to the populace in everything.

Exemplary leadership have taken the back seat. Change begins with the citizens and not elected Politicians who are paid by the citizens. Shameless hypocrisy made a President who campaigned against medical tourism go abroad for medicare.

Shameless hypocrisy makes a President to keep the same Chief of Army staff at the helm of the military, even with glaring facts that Buratai is a disaster. Shameless hypocrisy made a president tell his fellow country men he doesn’t know the technology that was used in the Ganduje “Gandollar” bribe videos.

On the flip-side, the same hypocrisy effected the arrest of Shehu Sani and a lot of other dissenting voices. Brazen hypocrisy made a president mum when he gifted his daughter the presidential jet to go on her own business. Hypocrisy of Malami with a nod from the President have let Danjuma Goje off EFCC hook.

For every hypocrite masked as a patriot, there’s always a day of reckoning.

It’s common knowledge corruption in Nigeria is systemic. It’s rife in all sectors, regions, religion and arms of government. We have all been a beneficiary or victim of corrupt practices at sometime.

Let me quickly create a picture of a secondary school Principal who is a disciplinarian and yet shows favoritism. He promotes some students who fails promotion exam and also punishes students differently for same offence. He will definitely loose credibility for lack of integrity.

Favouritism is endemic, its aids corruption and displays hypocrisy

On the other hand, the corruption in police, educational system, judiciary, the labour unions is still palpable.

Our institutions are weak and needs strengthening. Government interference is evident.

American political journalist Michael Gerson says that political hypocrisy is “the conscious use of a mask to fool the public and gain political benefit”. This is seen in the way President Buhari and Malami become either a furious tiger or a pet cat depending on who is involved. Senator Shehu Sani said called it the insecticide and deodorant treatment.

The only punishment meted on Babachir Lawal is the forced resignation after it became evident Nigerians would protest if he didn’t leave. No subsequent prosecution just occasional EFCC invite just to hoodwink the populace. Isn’t that daylight hypocrisy?

Let there be no untouchables.Let merit be applauded.

Corruption can occur on different scales. Corruption ranges from small favors between a small number of people (petty corruption), to corruption that affects the government on a large scale (grand corruption), and corruption that is so prevalent that it is part of the everyday structure of society, including corruption as one of the symptoms of organized crime.
