In his address to the members of the platform, the Senator stated that “The aim of this initiative is to sensitize individuals, families, and communities across Anambra on the best hygiene practices to prevent infection. COVID-19 is a real and dangerous threat, but with the right supply of information, the grave risk in remote and crowded communities can be reduced”.

He highlighted that “the COVID-19 is a global pandemic that threatens the lives of millions of people around the world. If the virus reaches our dear state, where many people are struggling with healthcare, hygienic provisions and overcrowding, it is expected to spread at an alarming rate and could result in mass loss of lives. The battle against the spread of this virus is not an individual task but a collective responsibility that requires us all to put aside our differences and biases and unite as indivisible creatures of God Almighty to support the Government in curbing this menace”.

“We will also embark on a voluntary fundraising donation to enable us to buy and distribute hygiene kits comprising alcohol-based hand sanitizers, soaps, surgical face masks, disposable gloves, wet wipes, disinfectant, detergent, toilet paper, etc and also run radio / TV advertisements for dissemination and sensitization of COVID-19 awareness campaign.

The current spread of the COVID-19 pandemic is deeply unsettling for many, it is important that we show empathy and support this initiative in any way that we can. Taking proactive measures to forestall a possible outbreak in Anambra is the least that we can do at a critical moment like this”.

In a related development, the Anambra State Government is doing its bit too. It has established an isolation facility at the NYSC Camp Mbaukwu/Umuawulu Isolation Centre. Also, the facilities at Awka, Nnewi, and Onitsha are almost ready. The state government has procured medical equipment and supplies and has launched a COVID-19 support fund among other measures including sharing of relief materials to the elderly (bags of rice etc), the economic stimulus package announced (tax refunds, etc) for traders and business owners.
